We are looking for a Department Head of Facility Operations will lead the optimization of operations and maintenance in over 90 facilities that support world-class science funded through the Department of Energy/Office of Science (DOE/SC).
We are seeking a proven leader that is results-driven, makes critical decisions using data and sound judgement, is fiscally responsible, and serves in the best interest of the Lab community and sponsors.
Berkeley Lab is located above UC Berkeley, on 202 acres that house over two million square feet of state-of-the-art scientific centers and support facilities. The Lab’s mission encompasses many scientific fields, and its buildings include supercomputing facilities, genetic sequencing labs, laser labs, microscope facilities, and office complexes. Thirteen Nobel Prizes have been associated with Berkeley Lab.
What You Will Do:
• Provide comprehensive strategic vision, oversight, and leadership for operations and maintenance of the Laboratory’s 90+ facilities in a mission ready state.
• Improve and maintain key processes, procedures, tools, metrics, and systems for facility operations, and work management.
• Lead and manage a team of approximately 25 staff, and provide guidance and counsel for effectively executing corrective and preventive maintenance and small projects (ranging from $50K to $1M) that will optimally support the Lab’s scientific programs and requirements.
• Hire and supervise staff at various levels, developing, coaching, and managing for high performance.
• Promote values of diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as safety and security.
• Provide transparent, relevant, and current communication with staff, Laboratory colleagues, and senior management.
• Proactively build and sustain partnerships within the Lab, University of California, Department of Energy, and the community.
• Create strong partnerships within operations, maintenance, work planning and control and stakeholders.
• Balance competing demands and priorities in planning, managing, and executing the Lab’s corrective and preventive maintenance work.
• Direct and converse technically with facility managers, work management staff, EHS, scientists, tenants, vendors and contractors.
What is Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Facility Management, or a related discipline and a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in industrial maintenance, facilities operation, maintenance, engineering and people management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in facilities operations/maintenance management, work management, and hazards analysis in a complex industrial plant or laboratory facility with multiple buildings.
• n-depth knowledge of office building and scientific laboratory building maintenance.
• Knowledge of disaster planning, emergency preparedness and general facility safety.
• Experience working with union staff through collective bargaining agreements.
• Must be able to perform the following physical duties:
- Exposure to all weather conditions, noise, dust and odors.
- Must be able to frequently climb inclined stairways and vertical ladders.
- Must be able to walk to and from job sites.
What We Desire:
• Advanced graduate degree in a related field.
• Certification in IFMA or BOMI.
• Knowledge and/or direct experience with DOE policies and procedures.
• Experience working in a research, university, or academic environment.

• The Facility Operations Department Head is appointed by and serves at the discretion of the Laboratory Director, this appointment is at-will and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
