Job Description
University of Manitoba Properties Limited Partnership (UM Properties)
OUR CLIENT
Taking ownership of the Southwood precinct offers a chance for the University of Manitoba to transform the entire Fort Garry campus and how people think about it. It is a rare opportunity to do something unique and transformative; to be aggressively sustainable in our thinking as we integrate the future development of the existing campus space with Southwood’s 120 acres, to allow for the future needs of the university while developing a vibrant interface with the community, in the form of a new, sustainable, multi-use neighbourhood. We see the potential for our campus community as a whole to become a 24/7 live/work/learn/play environment, shaped by five goals and guiding principles: connected, destination, sustainable, community, transformative. UM President, David Barnard
That vision is ready to be given concrete shape with the establishment of UM Properties, an arm’s length entity that will develop the Southwood Lands. The Board now seeks to recruit its first Chief Executive Officer to establish the organizational framework and lead the development of the Lands.
THE ROLE
The Board and CEO will lead the overall planning and development of the new community, which has been designated by the City of Winnipeg as a Major Redevelopment Site. In the Plan lies the framework for how the Southwood Lands are to be developed, but it will be up to the CEO to provide direction around: ownership structures and land reserves, standards and the University’s mission, potential revenue streams, opportunities to attract infrastructure, transit and other amenities, and also, opportunities to potentially advance or enhance Indigenous education, research, languages and cultures.
UM Properties requires an exceptional individual with an extensive real estate development background, passionate about building a legacy reflecting UM Properties' goals and values. The successful candidate will have experience working with a Board and be able to balance public, private and institutional objectives in conceiving and delivering a high-profile community development. The ability to see and act upon opportunities to generate market interest, create value and accelerate development activity is critical.
This is a very visible opportunity to display exemplary leadership, project management and relationship-building skills in creating and achieving a far-reaching vision.
Our client is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from women, racialized persons/persons of colour, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, persons of all sexual orientations and genders, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
