Recognizing the potential of real estate as a long-term and stable revenue source, the University has embarked on innovative arrangements, including public-private partnerships and purchasing some real estate assets. To ensure an alternative revenue strategy receives the necessary leadership and resourcing, the Real Estate, Ancillary Operations, and Partnerships (REAP) department was established in June 2023.
As part of its off-campus real estate strategy, McMaster has established the role of Executive Director, Real Estate. Reporting to the Associate Vice-President (Real Estate, Ancillary Operations, and Partnerships), this position collaborates closely with senior leadership, providing strategic advice, fostering partnerships, and supporting with high-profile negotiations. The Executive Director provides leadership and expertise in developing and implementing the University’s off campus real estate strategy focusing on asset monetization. Designed to generate significant funds, this strategy directly supports the University’s academic, research, and operational priorities, including innovative infrastructure development, partnerships and engagements, cutting-edge research, and an enhanced student experience. They will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to conceptualize and execute property transactions and projects, ensuring alignment with the University’s long-term goals. The role includes providing expert advice to senior leadership and the Board of Governors on opportunities to build and grow a sustainable real estate portfolio.
The ideal candidate is a senior real estate leader with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in real estate acquisition, development, and/or asset management, ideally completed within institutional or public-sector environments. They have a strong track record in structuring complex real estate transactions, including public-private partnerships, and possess deep financial acumen, market insight, and risk management expertise. With exceptional strategic leadership, stakeholder engagement, and negotiation skills, they can drive long-term real estate strategies that align with institutional goals while fostering strong partnerships with government, community, and private sector stakeholders. They will hold a relevant university degree and demonstrate strong ownership and accountability in their work.
