Job Description

Akerman LLP, a top 100 U.S. law firm serving clients across the America, is seeking a Planner I for its Miami office. Working with the firm's Land Use & Zoning Practice Group (the "Group"), the successful candidate will have strong attention to detail and excellent verbal/written communication skills. Under the direct supervision of attorneys, the incumbent will assist and support all aspects of filing applications for various land development applications and zoning approvals in a variety of jurisdictions across the south Florida region.  The ability to maintain an accurate filing system, work on several projects or issues simultaneously, manage time and tasks in a productive team environment are essential to the success of this role. 

The Group is looking for candidates who have experience working with the City of Miami, Miami Beach, Miami-Dade County and other municipalities in South Florida, as well as experience with the Florida Building Code. Must have a valid Florida Driver's License, reliable means of transportation and willing and able to commute as needed within the South Florida area. The role will be in-person at the Akerman Miami office.

The candidate's responsibilities would entail those typically associated with a Planning Technician and/or Planner I (as applicable in a firm setting), as listed under sample job descriptions on the American Planning Association website. Preference for candidates with a degree in urban planning, architecture, or related fields (AICP certification is preferred, but not required).

Primary responsibilities include:

*          preparing and filing applications for various land development applications and zoning approvals in a variety of jurisdictions throughout South Florida,

*          preparation of materials for public hearings such as relevant images, maps, charts, tables etc.

*          weekly gathering of relevant public hearing agendas,

*          maintaining and filing new lobbyist registration forms,

*          performing on-demand tasks outside the office on short notice; i.e., running documents to various government offices around the greater downtown area and sometimes county-wide,

*          maintaining and organizing the firm's Land Use electronic Library and key documents,

*          filings at the local jurisdictions for the Group's attorneys,

*          performing basic due diligence; i.e., pulling folios from the property appraiser's website, pulling various documents related to land development regulation from local government websites, and navigating the various GIS systems

*          assisting in researching and working with government agencies on a variety of land use regulatory issues,

*          preparing PowerPoint presentations,

*          preparing graphics for written reports,

*          processing payment of filing fees and other invoices related to the Group's various applications and submittals,

*          other similar tasks as identified by the Group.
