ULI Los Angeles (ULI LA), a District Council (“DC”) of ULI, carries forth the global mission as the preeminent real estate forum in Southern California, facilitating the open exchange of ideas, information and experiences among local, national and international industry leaders and policy makers. POSITION SUMMARY
The Executive Director will provide strategic and thought leadership for ULI LA guiding its program of work for the future. As the lead staff of ULI LA, the position is responsible for overseeing the DC’s varied programs of work, developing, and executing strategies, managing the district council and its organizational resources, and building relationships across community partners and a diverse membership.
The programs this role oversees and directs include impact initiatives, membership, sponsorship, communications and marketing, and general management of operations. Membership development and retention, ensuring diversity enhancement at all levels, communications, public relations, and general operational management.
This is a full-time exempt position reporting to the Executive Vice President, District Councils, in the Corporate Office, with a dotted line to the Chair of the ULI LA DC. The Executive Director will have direct oversight of a small team of staff and contractors. Additionally, the Executive Director also serves as an ex-officio member of the ULI LA Management Committee and Advisory Board.
The Executive Director is a results-oriented and entrepreneurial leader with excellent organizational and management skills, a skilled communicator, relationship builder, and strategic thinker, who can also drill down to the details and produce exceptional outcomes.
This position requires local travel to events and sometimes to ULI’s Corporate Office in Washington, D.C., and travel to the annual Fall Meeting, Spring Meeting, and ULI Leadership Retreat in various locations across the Americas. Meetings, events, and programs may be in the early mornings or evenings. The salary range for this position has been set at $150,800 to $181,000 annually. Actual salary will vary based on factors including experience, education, skills, and other job-related factors. The range listed is just one component of ULI’s total compensation package for employees which includes a full and competitive benefits package.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Working collaboratively with the DC Chair, Governance and Management Committees, and Advisory Board, formulate and execute on the business and strategic plans to define priorities and program objectives and outcomes as well as methods to measure success in achieving them.
- Work closely with the ULI LA Committees and Councils
- Continually build and maintain ongoing collaborative relationships with local real estate companies to execute comprehensive membership, education, impact and fundraising strategies.
- Direct the planning and implementation of the DC’s program of work, including: programs and events throughout the region focused on real estate trends, sustainability/smart growth, housing, infrastructure, and capital markets; leadership initiatives (Diversity & Inclusion, Young Leaders, NEXT and Women’s Leadership Institute); local technical advisory panels (TAPs),among others.
- Engage members, sponsors, and key stakeholders at all levels to help ULI LA identify and launch initiatives aimed at pursuing healthy and thriving communities for all.
- Foster the expansion and implementation of the TAP program throughout the DC to activate member-leaders, engage myriad communities, and provide this valuable resource to solve real estate challenges.
- Develop, refine, and implement a comprehensive sponsorship program that engages the Sponsorship Committee in securing financial support to sustain the district council’s activities. Secure and maintain stable financial resources to support the program of work, creatively identifying new sponsorship and fundraising opportunities to diversify revenue sources.
- Work closely with and support the Chair, Management Committee and Sponsorship Committee on developing and implementing new strategies, utilizing best practices from other large, successful DC’s, to expand the structural revenue potential for ULI LA.
- Develop and maintain key external strategic alliances with other local professional associations, academic institutions, public sector officials, and nonprofit organizations.
- Manage and develop team members and oversee contractors hired as external support partners.
- Manage, develop, lead, inspire and guide a collaborative and effective staff/contractor team. Apply the same leadership, collaboration, and engagement with members.
- Manage ULI LA’s financial resources/budget; prepare annual recertification for ULI LA's Management Committee and ULI National approval.
- Identify, prioritize, and implement ongoing initiatives to promote a more diverse and inclusive real estate industry.
- Protect and enhance ULI LA’s brand; tell ULI LA’s story through web, social media, and other communication vehicles.
- Ensure all ULI standard systems and procedures are utilized and maintain ongoing administrative reporting and relations with corporate headquarters.
- Ensure that the ULI LA’s District Council programming aligns with the ULI Global priorities and operates in compliance with ULI policies, maintaining a strong partnership with ULI National.
- Identify and adopt best practices from other ULI District Councils with a goal of increasing retention.

The minimum requirements for this position are listed below:

10 - 12 years of experience in organizational or non-profit management, association management, fundraising/relationship management. Real estate or land use background is a plus.

Bachelor’s degree required.

Ability to deal effectively with myriad issues from big picture to detailed project management and to effectively prioritize efforts.

Ability to deal effectively with people at all levels, including but not limited to corporate leaders, politicians, educators, public officials, etc. Including the ability to communicate at all levels openly and effectively in both oral and written form.

Experience in the preparation and monitoring of annual budget and financial statements; proven fiscal responsibility.

Knowledge of consensus building and the ability to depoliticize sensitive issues; a forward thinker who can resolve issues before they occur.

Proven track record in strategic planning and execution of sound business plans.
