University Housing at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks highly qualified applicants for the Director of Facilities for University Housing position. The individual selected for the position will serve on the University Housing executive team, manages and leads all aspects of facilities operations, maintenance, custodial services, and capital project planning for 26 residence halls, 1,150 apartments, 6 dining halls, and other University Housing operated and occupied buildings. University Housing serves approximately 11,000 residents, families and guests within 3.75 million square feet of floor space on 150 acres of land.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Unit Leadership and Supervision (50%)
- Provide direction and leadership to the University Housing Facilities unit, which comprises three areas: operations, maintenance, and planning. Facilities operations includes building services, inventory, and recycling. Facilities maintenance services includes a comprehensive maintenance program with inspector and crafts & trades personnel. Facilities planning includes project planning, new capital construction, renovation and construction projects, and interior design.
- Manage a large, diverse, complex staff of approximately 250 employees, encompassing training, professional development, performance review, related employee processes. Employees include 13 different union-represented groups, as well as, professional and specialized staff. Participate and assist with union contract negotiations.
- Oversee facilities emergency protocols to respond to building and staffing emergencies. Serve in a crisis management role when required.
- Establish and ensure standards for responsive customer service that is respectful of the diversity in the resident and staff populations.
Budget Management and Project Management (25%)
- Administer and manage the Housing Facilities $30 million annual budget, which includes the department's repair and replacement (R&R) program (approximately $4 million), and Long Range Facilities Master Plan ($3.5 million-$5 million).
- Provide leadership and oversee a comprehensive, long-range facilities master plan that implements critical elements of the University Housing and Student Affairs strategic plans. Oversee University Housing building construction and renovation projects; communicate with department and University stakeholders related to master plan direction and project(s) progress.
- Develop and implement scheduled maintenance programs for equipment repair, building upkeep, furniture, and interior design projects for University Housing facilities and programs.
- Prepare estimates and budgets for a variety of facilities projects including the Auxiliary Facilities System R&R request process and the University's 10-year capital plan process.
- Develop and administer contracts with outside consultants and contractors in conjunction with the University's Facilities & Services and procurement/contracting offices.
Strategic Leadership and Collaboration (25%)
- Provide leadership and insight to the strategic direction of University Housing. Serve as a member of the University Housing Executive Team. Lead and serve on strategic working teams and/or projects.
- Collaborate and develop productive relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders within and outside the department, University, and community.
- Advocate for and represent various stakeholders within University Housing at the University and System level for larger and more complex construction projects.
- Represent University Housing in campus, regional, national, and international forums.
Position Requirements and Qualifications:
Education Required: Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree preferred.
Experience Required: A minimum of 8 years of experience in facilities management, residence life/housing services, construction project management, engineering/architectural services, or a related field. Preferred: Experience in building maintenance services in a residential living program and/or college or university; equipment maintenance programs; general construction project oversight; the delivery of services to a residential population; and, work with collective bargaining units.
Training, Licenses or Certifications: None required. Preferred: Certifications within respective facilities management programs and/or services.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Demonstrated skills in supervising a large and diverse staff, sound oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals and stakeholders.
Environmental Demands: This position occurs in general office conditions. This position may have travel demands both on and off campus. The work schedule may be inconsistent and may vary based upon work priorities and cycles. This position is responsible for facility emergency protocols and response.
Security Requirement: This position is a security sensitive position. Comprehensive background checks, which may include but is not limited to a criminal conviction information check, will be conducted for the person offered the position.
Organizational Relationship: Director of Facilities for University Housing reports to the Executive Director of University Housing, who reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Director of Auxiliary Services, who reports to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time (100%), benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month basis. The position is available as soon as possible after the closing date.
